My Y Story – Jody Sander
Every member of the YMCA community encounters the Y at various points in their lives. Often times, individuals seek out the Y when they are faced with adversities they can’t overcome alone. For Jody Sander, it was her drive and perseverance to make a serious lifestyle change that ultimately resulted in her losing a total of 85lbs in just the past year and a half. Although Jody is now a regular at the YMCA, she found the Y at the end of her journey. She found the Y when she needed it the most.
Jody’s story started in October of 2015 when she made a pact with her friends to walk the Leavenworth Half Marathon a year later. It was setting this goal for herself that symbolized her decision to make the dramatic change that would leave her in a healthier and happier place. Coping with the disconnect between feeling active and healthy while still being obese was one of the hardest obstacles Jody needed to overcome. Once she defeated her internal conflict, she was well on her way to reaching her goals. When she signed up for the Half Marathon in January, Jody had already lost 10lbs! By the time Bloomsday 2015 came around, she participated 35lbs lighter than the year before. The more progress she experienced, the more motivated she became. Finally, it was October and it was time for Jody and her friends to achieve the challenge they set for themselves one year ago. Finishing within their goal time at 3hr and 15min, Jody had accomplished what she worked so hard to do. This newfound health enthusiast had reached her goal, but feared reverting back to her old exercise and dietary habits. She was walking 25-50 miles per week, but as the dark months of winter approached, she found exercising outside to be increasingly challenging. After months of not utilizing her membership at the Y, Jody knew that it was time to come back. Part of being a Y member is promoting healthy living through example. A year and a half ago, Jody wouldn’t have been able to justifiably say she was living this out. Today, she knows that the Y is where she belongs. Since Jody has rejoined the Y community, she has lost an additional 23lbs. She’s close to reaching her goal weight, but far from the end of her journey. As she transitions into a new way of life, the Y will be with her every step of the way, providing an environment that allows individuals to achieve their full potential and reach goals they never imagined they could.
