The Y – so much more than a gym
The YMCA has a unique view of health. We strive to develop holistic health, focusing on the improvement of mind, body, and spirit; each is just as important as the other. We believe that the development of this kind of health is best fostered when within a community that shares the same values. It is because of members like Cheryl McHenry, a Y member for the past 16 years, a proud grandmother, and a consistent donor to the Y’s Annual Campaign, that the YMCA community is unlike any other of it’s kind.
A regular at the Valley YMCA, she enjoys exercising with members that have the same genuine desire to be healthy and fit. But the value she places on physical fitness is only a part of what motivates her to exercise. Diabetes and Cardiac disease are present in her family, and she hopes to set an example for her granddaughters to live a healthy lifestyle. Cheryl’s greatest motivator is her orientation toward improving the future of our youth. That is, not only for her granddaughters, but for her community as a whole. By donating to the Annual Campaign, Cheryl hopes to give families the chance to send their children to either swimming lessons, or camp. One of the things she loves the most about the Y is how family-oriented we are. The Y community has become an extension of her family.
For Cheryl, the combination of being physically active within a health oriented community, setting an example for her granddaughters to do the same, and donating in hopes of bettering the future of the youth in her community is how the YMCA has become so much more than a gym.
